Four vulture species have been observed in Iraq. These are the Egyptian Vulture (Neophron percnopterus), the Bearded Vulture (Gypaetus barbatus), the Eurasian Griffon Vulture (Gyps fulvus), and the Cinereous Vulture (Aegypius monachus).  The IUCN Red List, states all of these apart from the Griffon Vulture as globally endangered (EN).
The Egyptian Vulture are both breeding summer visitor and passage migrants in Iraq, with significant numbers of breeding pairs in the mountains of Kurdistan Region. Based on a study by Nature Iraq and Birdlife International, over 330,000 birds are killed annually by poaching in Iraq.

An additional threat that faces charismatic species, such as the Egyptian Vulture, is chick collection and trading.  Threatened bird species, including the Egyptian Vulture, have been observed in the markets and in some cases on public display in cages.

​Applicants should have: 

• A strong interest in environmental issues and mammal conservation with a dedication to improving and protecting the environment in Iraq and Kurdistan; 
• Ability and interest in participating in a rigorous field course in mountainous areas under diverse weather conditions;
• Ability to understand and speak English;

A biology background or interest and some prior field experience through employment or education.
​Having a biology background is a boost for getting accepted however it is not a must.

Hana Raza is a Kurdish wildlife conservationist who rediscovered the Persian leopard, once thought to be extinct, in the mountains of Kurdistan in 2011. She dedicated her career to establishing a program for conserving this globally endangered species.  In 2017, she was awarded the prestigious award of Future for Nature.
